Our History

Forsyth Methodist Church began in 1823 on North Harris Street and then moved to the currrent site at 68 West Johnston Street in 1870. Our faith has been tested over the years with a damaging storm in 1871, a devastating cyclone in 1894, and a serious fire in 1979. Each time, rebuilding was performed by dedicated and faithful servants.

More recently we have added missions and ministries to include the food bank, preschool and after school programs, the New Traditions contemporary service, and the addition of the Wesley Family Life Center.

We are thankful for those who led the way in the past. Their vision and understanding of God's plan for Forsyth Methodist have gotten us where we are today. But we also know that we must continue to look and work to the future for the generations to come.

Our Beliefs

John Wesley and the early Methodists were particularly concerned about inviting people to experience God’s grace and to grow in their knowledge and love of God through disciplined Christian living. They placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as “practical divinity” has continued to be a hallmark of Methodism today.

As Methodists, we have an obligation to bear a faithful Christian witness to Jesus Christ, the living reality at the center of the Church’s life and witness. To fulfill this obligation, we reflect critically on our biblical and theological inheritance, striving to express faithfully the witness we make in our own time.

Today, our members are both seekers and believers reflecting a broad range of theological positions. We recognize the centrality of Jesus Christ and offer people the opportunity to explore how his example might guide their daily lives.
